Björk: Is She Human?

We have a theory: the being called Björk is from another planet. Skeptical? Peep the otherworldly video for “Utopia,” fresh off her new album of the same name. It’s absolutely beautiful . . . and absolutely out there. Waaaay out there.

What do you think?

The stars in this work are real constellations, based on Billie Holiday’s own birth chart: sun sign Aries, moon in Capricorn, rising sign Aquarius. Hear It with Your Body

sound-shirt-LIT

Can you imagine hearing music with your body? London design firm CuteCircuit has partnered with Germany’s Jungen Symphoniker Hamburg to produce the Sound Shirt, which allows deaf people to feel the music being played when they wear the shirt. It’s pretty mindblowing.

Purple Badness

Cosmic. I am still dazed when I think about Prince being gone from this plane, realizing through layers of reminiscence just how much his music is a part of my evolution and experience. All is I can say is that I am SO incredibly thankful that this man’s music was a huge part of my formative years….and remained so after I became a grown-ass woman. Speaking as an artist….the brilliance, breadth and depth of his work is both staggering and inspiring. His fiery commitment to his own empowerment as a creative made all of us stronger.

R.I.P. Purple Supernova. Keep bringing the genius and the heat wherever you are.

TBT: Sci-Fi R&B

Back in 2001, lonnnng before the remake of Tron, the Princess of R&B had a smokin’ hot video with a meta-twist: All the action took place in a Xanadu-esque  electro-cyber-wonderland that was actually the inside of the motorcycle that she was hot-rodding on through a futuristic city.

Damn, I miss Aaliyah.

Goodnight, Space Oddity

David Bowie was one of the first people that made me realize that if different, weird, off-center, freaky, crazy, innovative, original, truly unique is what you are, it’s a good thing….something to wallow and flourish in, because that’s where the magic is. This was a paradigm shift for a Black girl in the ‘burbs of Toledo, Ohio who was convinced she belonged somewhere else. Bowie kept it hot, kept it fresh, kept it moving, kept it growing, kept it electric, kept it interesting, kept it meaningful…through the very end of his time on Earth. I imagine that he’s somewhere light-years away by now, blazing new trails. How dope to have witnessed a true artist who embraced, explored and lived who he was…instead of trying to hide (from) it or ‘outgrow’ it. Thank You for the mind-blowing inspiration and the game-changing music.

Tuesday Tune: Straight Outta Minneapolis

PERFUME MONSTER
From the land of Prince Rogers Nelson comes a mysterious band called Perfume Monster. You won’t find a lot of into out there on them, but the sound is fresh, cool, rhthym-y….sexy; I guess if there’s such a thing as hipster swag, they have it.  I heard them on an NPR show looking back at hot new music of 2015: I was intrigued when the music writer said she discovered Perfume Monster  at a live show in Minneapolis and immediately felt that “they’re about to blow up” vibe in the air.

For some reason, “You Don’t Know a Damn Thing” reminds me of relationships that turn me on the most: sexy MFs who deliciously take you to that edge and have you wanting to rush straight into it.

Hot Kiwi Funk: Fat Freddy’s Drop

Saturday Night Special: Fat Freddy’s Drop is a smokin’ hot, very soulful dub/reggae/techno/jazz/r&b band out of New Zealand that’s burning it up right now. The singer’s voice sounds like an epic story in and of itself (that he’s gorgeous doesn’t hurt either) and the band is TIGHT. This tune (from their new album, BAYS, is more on the  tribal-fied electro-funk side.

FFD has tapped into something both timeless and quite futuresexy. Yum. If you have a taste for rhythm at all, groove on….
